FAQ

What is CBD?

CBD (Cannabidiol) is a chemical compound found in the hemp plant that has been shown to have positive effects on a wide range of issues, such as anxiety, inflammation, and others. CBD enters the body and is received by the endocannabinoid system, which regulates physiological and cognitive processes. This system is found in all animals, including humans and their dogs.

Is it legal?

CBD became legal nationwide in December 2018 when Congress passed the 2018 Farm Bill. Congress renews the farm bill every few years to make sure the laws are fit for the needs of the American people and economy. The 2018 renewal of this bill removed hemp from the list of controlled substances and from being classified as marijuana. Hemp was legal until marijuana came under scrutiny in the early 1900s and has been grouped in with its cannabis cousin since then. Prior to this, hemp was a well-known crop and had many common uses. Now that is no longer considered a controlled substance, the United States is the third largest hemp-producing country in the world.

How do I know it works?

Because of how recently it has become legal in the United States, scientific studies on the effects of CBD in dogs are limited… but they do exist. Smaller scientific studies are taking place to build a foundation of knowledge on the subject, but these studies require delegation of funds, resources, etc. Another reason scientific studies on the effects of CBD in dogs are limited is because of the time required to perform them. When studying the effects of anything on the body, studies tend to take longer to gather data and monitor extended use.

Just like us, every dog is unique and special. Once you begin using CBD with yours, you will see what benefits it can bring and how it might make better days for your best friend. Be sure to let us know how CBD is helping your dog!

When should I give CBD to my dog?

CBD may help dogs to deal with anxiety that comes from a variety of sources. If your dog suffers from anxiety, try giving a dose to your dog prior to being exposed to stressful situations. For example, if a thunderstorm is rolling in and your dog tends to hide under the bed, try giving them a dose just before the storm arrives. Take note of how your dog responds to CBD and adjust accordingly for the next storm that rolls through.

Another situation where CBD might be helpful is when your dog doesn’t seem interested in their daily walk because of pain that comes with aging. Try giving your dog a dose of CBD 15 to 30 minutes prior to their walk to see if this improves their desire to get up and move around. The goal of using CBD with your dog is to make their days more enjoyable. Use your discretion and judgment, along with any recommendations from your vet, to decide when is the best time for your dog to receive the benefits that CBD can provide.

How should I give the bones to my dog?

With BakedBones’ baked bones, the answer is simple:

  1. Open pouch
    1. Words of caution: some dogs come running when they hear this sound
  2. Reach into pouch
    1. Salivating and eager tail wagging tend to begin
  3. Remove treat from pouch
    1. Salivating and eager tail wagging ensue and intensify
  4. At this point you have many options. You can give the baked bone to your dog in the same way you would give them a treat, or you can incorporate it into your training and use the baked bone as a reward. (We let our dog sniff the baked bone to pick up its scent, then hide it in another room. After receiving her release word, the hunt is on!)
Our CBD is mixed into the dough prior to baking, so it is spread evenly throughout. If you decide to half the bone for a lower dose, the CBD content will also split evenly. This allows for more control when deciding how much CBD is right for your dog.

How should I give the tinctures to my dog?

With BakedBones’ oil tinctures, there are other options:

  1. Adding drops of the tincture to your dog’s food can be an easy way to give CBD in this form. It can also serve to make mealtime a little more exciting!
Try giving drops to your dog under the tongue or along the inside of their cheeks for best results. The bioavailability (amount that actually enters the dog’s bloodstream) of the CBD oil tincture is higher when using this method because of the tiny blood vessels and thin skin that help to absorb more quickly.

How much should I give to my dog?

In general, 1 to 3 MG of CBD per 10 pounds of weight is recommended for dogs. We recommend that you start low and increase as necessary. If you would like more specific dosing guidelines for your pet, or for any health concerns, medication interactions, or other questions, contact your dog’s veterinarian. TINCTURE DOSAGE CHART

Can I just share my CBD products with my dog?

The best answer is “no.” Not all products made for human consumption are safe for dogs. This is true even within the CBD industry. Some sugar-free CBD edibles for humans are sweetened using Xylitol, which is extremely toxic when consumed by dogs. The Center for Veterinary Medicine at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warns that Xylitol is poisonous to dogs and can be quickly life-threatening. Xylitol is also a Keto-friendly product and is used widely as a low-carb sugar substitute. There are many other chemical compounds found in ordinary human products that may be harmless to us, but deadly to dogs. Always use caution and research ingredients before considering human products as an option for yours.

Why is everyone talking about CBD?

The popularity of CBD is spreading fast. You’re likely reading this now because a friend, family member, or someone at the office told you to check out the benefits of CBD for dogs. Ever since the use of hemp was made legal nationwide in December 2018, people have been trying it out and sharing their success stories. The benefits of CBD in dogs haven’t yet been scientifically proven in formal studies, but they are in the works. In the meantime, people are quickly finding out the benefits of this natural herb with their own dogs and are passing the word along.

Where does the hemp oil come from?

The hemp oil used in BakedBones products comes from organically farmed hemp in the U.S. Midwest, which is grown and harvested by farmers in a small, close-knit community. Our hemp oil is extracted from these hemp plants using cutting edge extraction processes with the aim of producing the most pure and natural hemp available.

DID YOU KNOW?

We use only full-spectrum hemp oil in all BAKEDBONES products because the "entourage effect" of full-spectrum hemp oil gives users the benefit of the entire cannabis plant.  Rather than isolating and removing the CBD compounds from the hemp plant, more cannabinoids are present.
